Home automation system includes security features

A little over a year ago, I decided to update the ancient thermostat in my home.

I wanted to take advantage of modern technology and enjoy the benefits of a smart thermostat. Despite the rather high cost of today’s generation of thermostats, the simple upgrade can save a tremendous amount of money on heating and cooling bills. Since I didn’t feel confident choosing or installing the best thermostat for my specific heating and cooling system, I consulted with a local HVAC contractor. The technician went through the different models and features available, and then started telling me about home automation systems. A “smart” home links smart appliances and essentials systems together, allowing a single point of control through a smartphone or laptop. I’m now able to program and operate the thermostat, sump pump, lights, washing machine and all sorts of things through a simple app on my phone. One of the major benefits of the home automation upgrade is the security features. As part of the package, we invested in a wireless security system that includes motion activated outdoor lighting, surveillance cameras, window sensors, door locks and alarms. If there’s movement on my front porch, I get notified and can check out a real time video of what’s going on. No matter where I happen to be, I can turn lights on and off, lock or unlock the doors and even talk to whoever might be knocking on my door. The security system wasn’t something that I felt I needed, but I’m certainly glad to have it. Whether I’m at home or away, I feel better knowing that the house is locked and I can easily check up on it.
