As a new home owner, I have a lot to learn.
- I realized that my home heating and cooling runs through an extensive network of ductwork.
I assumed when I got the house that this was something I’d be able to do on my own. Well, in short, my assumption was wrong. I ended up hiring a team of HVAC professionals to come and clean the ductwork. The cleaning process required tools I certainly would not have had on my own. The HVAC professionals used high powered vacuums and rotary brushes. Apparently these tools are used to agitate the dust, or to dislodge some of the dust that has settled into the ductwork. When the dust and allergens are loosened up a bit, it makes it easier to vacuum them out. While I’ve heard that there are ways to clean ductwork on your own, after seeing it done, I think I will leave this job to the professionals. You only need to clean your ductwork once every 3 to 5 years, so it’s not like it is a crazy expense to keep up with. After the HVAC technicians were done cleaning the ductwork, the air quality felt so much better. My allergies improved significantly. I guess there was more dust caked in that ductwork than I thought!
