Contracting wasn’t my forte.

My brother was one of the best contractors in our area. It seemed he was born with a knowledge of contracting that came from contractors of the past. He naturally knew what to do when he started contracting. He asked me if I wanted to work with him. I was a decent carpenter and good at putting up walls, laying flooring, and roofs. Installing windows was a different game. I wasn’t a roofer, but I could help install a roof. I tried to tell my brother that contracting wasn’t my forte, when he wanted me to go out and give estimates and come up with a plan and scope of work to be done. I just wanted to be a worker, and do what I did best. He told me that if he could do a contracting job, then I could, but it didn’t work that way. The difference was that I didn’t enjoy contracting. I wanted to do work on my schedule and not on someone else’s schedule. I didn’t mind working as a roofer. I was okay with climbing up on a roof and repairing residential roofing. I was okay doing deck repair or window installation. I told my brother that if he was looking for a partner in his contracting business, he should talk to our brother-in-law. He had been helping his father build houses for almost forty years. I’m not even sure why he didn’t consider our brother-in-law instead of talking to me. I thought it would have been a smarter choice, but other than owning a contracting company, he never was the smartest member of our family.
