ventilation Matters in a Nail Salon

My mom and I run a nail salon together.

I love what I do! I love getting creative with my clients’ nails.

The week leading up to high school prom was always our most busy time of the year. People would book with me weeks in advance, so that they could get nail art to match their prom outfits. Last year, a few days before prom week, my mom and I were met with a surprise when we opened up the salon one morning. It was humid, and the smell of our nail chemicals was overwhelming. I went to adjust the thermostat, but found that the A/C unit’s fan wouldn’t even turn on. I went to the department store next to the salon and bought ten fans. I placed them all around the store in strategic locations, to ventilate the space as well as possible. Nail salons use a lot of pungent chemicals, and my mom and I do our best to manage the circulation; our HVAC system is integral to that process, so while I was working on the fans, my mom called an HVAC contractor. The technician arrived an hour later, and the few customers that we had that morning were luckily very gracious regulars who didn’t trust anyone else with their manicures. He assessed the system, and determined that we needed a new compressor. I asked despairingly, “Will it be installed before next week?” The technician smiled and said, “It’ll be installed by the end of the day! I have a unit identical to yours in my shop right now, I just need to go pick it up.” By the time prom week started, and I was booked sun-up to sun-down, our ventilation in the salon was even better than before. We really dodged a bullet!
