We have had the worst time heating and cooling our large three story great room.
It is a beautiful room, with soaring ceilings, big windows, and a large wood burning fireplace.
But all of that beauty is hard to enjoy when you’re freezing there during the winter and you’re sweating to death there in the summer! That’s the issue that we’ve been having. No matter how many times we read our favorite HVAC blog and try to implement the energy savings tips that they suggest to us, nothing seems to help. It’s like the three story great room doesn’t even have heating and cooling devices installed in there at all. Even though furnace and the A/C seem like they are running on an almost constant basis, the temperature in the great room never seems to improve. As a matter of fact, the indoor air quality in the room doesn’t seem all that great either. It’s like we are living outside, except that we are inside. At least the windows are good and we aren’t getting rained on while we are in the house. There’s still a terrible draft coming from somewhere, though, and the heating and cooling don’t seem to make one bit of difference. I actually called our local HVAC company to see if they had any ideas for us, and they said that our original contractor for the project really should have warned us that we would have this issue with our heating and cooling in an addition the size of ours. At this point, I would have to agree! The HVAC tech that I spoke with mentioned that we should try installing a ductless mini split unit to help with the heating and cooling issues in the great room.
