If you have roommates, wear headphones

I have a quick life pro tip for you, just in case you hadn’t learned how to be considerate before.

If you live with roommates, and even if they are your family members, you should put headphones in when you’re at home. If you’re listening to something on your phone, like a podcast, a movie, or a new playlist, please just stick headphones in your ears and keep your audio entertainment to yourself. This is especially true if you live in a home that has central heating, cooling, and ventilation installed inside of it. It’s bad enough when you live in a home with thin walls and you can hear everything that other people are doing. It’s very disturbing to hear their conversations, TV shows, and general movements. It’s even worse when you have air ducts running through every wall in the house, connecting your room to everybody else’s through abundant air vents. You might not realize how much air duct work will conduct sound, but I can tell you that your noises easily echo through the extensive heating and cooling channels. Even if you’re listening to a song or podcast three rooms over, you are connected directly to your roommates through the central heating and cooling system. Unless they block their air vents, they can hear everything that’s going on through the metallic air passageways. If you want to be a considerate roommate or simply piss off your family less often, I strongly suggest you wear headphones and keep your sounds to yourself. If that won’t work for you, you should probably invest in separate heating and cooling systems so you can block off your air duct work. It will keep your home happier.
